Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was the president of the United States of America during the Civil War. He wanted slaves to be free and supported Union's cause. He held the country together during the war. He was born in Kentucky, Hardin county. He married Mary Todd Lincoln and had four sons. When he ran for the president of United States of America, he won the election even though his name was not on nine ballots in southern states. Once the war was over he helped start the thirteenth amendment that abolished slavery . Lincoln was assassinated at Fords Theater. He died six days after the Civil War.
Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee was the General of the Confederate army. Before he became the General of the Confederate army, he was offered a place in the Union army , but he declined not wanting to fight against his home state.When he was younger his family did not have much money so he decided to join the army to get a free education. He graduated from West Point Military Academy. He married the great granddaughter of Martha Washington, her name was Mary.
Ulysses S. Grant
Grant was the General and Chief of the whole Union army. His father was a tanner (a person who turns animal hides into leather and etc.) . Grant did not want to be a tanner, so he went to West Point military school and became a soldier. He fought in the Mexican American War. When he came back home he opened a general store. When the Civil War started he reentered the military. He started in the Illinois militia and became a general. He won many battles and President Lincoln made him the General and Chief of the whole Union army.
