John Brown's Raid - On October 16, 1859, John Brown took 21 armed abolitionists to Harper's Ferry to raid the town. The plan was to get weapons and free more slaves. John Brown thought that hundreds of slaves would break free and come to their aid. Unluckily the plan did not work, because no slaves came to help them. It did not work but it made the divide between the north and the south even deeper than it already was.
The battle Fort Sumter- Fort Sumter is in Charleston, SC by the coast. There were two battles at Fort Sumter. During the first battle, Confederate troops wanted to take the fort from the Union troops, because it was along the coast of a Confederate state.Tension increased when the Confederate troops surrounded the fort. Soon the Union troops was running out of supplies. The Confederates wanted the Union troops to give up without a fight but, they would not give up. They hoped a ship would come with supplies. On April 12, 1861 the Confederate troops were given the order that if the Union troops did not surrender in a hour start firing. The Union did not surrender and firing began. The Union troops were outnumbered by the Confederates. Now that the shots have been fired the war has begun. During the second battle Union troops tried to take back the fort on September 8,1863 but did not succeed.The Union troops shot at the fort and reduced it to rubble, but the Confederate flag still stood.
The Battle of Gettysburg- The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the war because before this battle the Union army was not winning many battles. The battle was three days long. On the first day the Confederate troops outnumbered the Union troops and forced them into the nearby town of Gettysburg. General Robert E Lee could not push the Union army any further. By second day the Union army had time to get defenses ready and held their ground. On the third day General E. Lee gave it all, it was a very bloody battle and Confederate troops had to retreat.
Appomattox Court House- The Confederate surrendered the Appomattox court house on April 9, 1865. The Confederates were going to North Carolina to join more confederates with supplies because they were running out, but the Union had them surrounded. They were forced to surrender. They surrendered under decent conditions . The conditions were that they give Union their rifles, but keep there mules and horses.

Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin is a book by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book is about Anti-Slavery. This book inspired another way to look at slavery. Harriet Beecher Stowe was born on June, 14, 1811 in Litchfield , CT. Harriet's mother died when she was 5 years old. She went to school at Hartford Female Seminary were her older sister worked. Later on she started working there as a teacher. In 1832 she moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Harriet started professionally writing in Cincinnati. In Connecticut there wasn't that much slavery, so she really had not experienced it till she moved to Ohio.The more she learned the more horrified she got. She wrote the book to raise awareness in the north. This book changed peoples view on slavery.
Effects
The
south was very bitter so they started making Jim Crow laws , a Jim Crow
law is that you can only vote if your great grandfather was free. Of course
most of the slaves family were also slaves that is why they made these laws.
Another Jim Crow law was that Negroes and Whites have different different
sitting rooms and even separate water fountains. Another effect of the war was
that after all the battles the soil was not that great for farming anymore so ,
the south's economy went down.There was a lot of rebuilding too.One other effect of the war was the thirteenth amendment that abolished slavery.
